End-to-end Fairness for TCP Traffic in 802.11e Wireless Mesh Networks Without Coordination

چکیده
We consider end-to-end per-station and per-flow fair bandwidth allocations for TCP traffic in 802.11 based multiradio multi-hop networks. We first show that TCP ACK packets have to be prioritised using IEEE 802.11e since otherwise congestion losses of ACK packets cause unpredictable performance. We then prove that prioritising ACK packets alone and ignoring TCP data packets results in per-station max-min fairness. In terms of flow level fairness however, we highlight that gross unfairness can exist between competing traffic flows due to this per-station max-min fairness. We propose the use of 802.11e’s Transmission Opportunity (TXOP) mechanism to enforce/restore fairness. In particular, we prove that as long as a proper utility function is designed, arbitrary per-station fairness objectives can be achieved at the MAC layer. At the flow level, we present a specific scheme that ensures max-min fairness. This proposed scheme is simple, implementable using off-the-shelf devices and fully decentralized (require no message passing). Claims are proved theoretically and verified against both simulations and testbed.

Increasing end-to-end fairness over IEEE 802.11e-based wireless mesh networks
In this paper, we discuss the issue of fairness in the IEEE802.11e over wireless mesh networks. Fairness is an important factor that we have to achieve before talking about QoS. Inspired by social networks approximations, and to achieve fairness and provide QoS by regulating heterogeneous traffic, we extended the original IEEE802.11e protocol by introducing a new algorithm based on the ‘token b...
متن کاملAchieving End-to-end Fairness in 802.11e Based Wireless Multi-Hop Mesh Networks Without Coordination
To mitigate the damaging impacts caused by interference and hidden terminals, it has been proposed to use orthogonal channels in wireless multi-hop mesh networks. We demonstrate however that even if these issues are completely eliminated with perfectly assigned channels, gross unfairness can still exist amongst competing flows which traverse multiple hops.We propose the use of 802.11e’s TXOP me...
متن کاملVoice Traffic Service Guarantee in Wireless Mesh Networks Based on IEEE 802.11e
The IEEE 802.11e standard is mostly concerned with traffic differentiation in single-hop infrastructured wireless networks. Wireless mesh networks use several wireless hops in order to forward packets to their destination. A significant issue is that the standard does not map network characteristics into the access protocol parameters it provides. This paper investigates different configuration...
متن کاملProvisioning of Parameterized Quality of Service in 802.11e Based Wireless Mesh Networks
There has been a growing interest in the use of wireless mesh networks. Today’s wireless technology enables very high data rate up to hundreds of Megabits per second, which creates the high demand of supporting real-time multimedia applications over wireless mesh networks. Hence it is imperative to support quality of service (QoS) in wireless mesh networks. In this paper, we design a framework ...
متن کاملUsing traffic asymmetry to enhance TCP performance
A wealth of recent work has gone into optimizing the performance of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) on the downlink channel of wireless networks such as for example, honing its congestion awareness mechanism so that it is minimally affected by random wireless losses, and optimizing achieved fairness of the end-to-end TCP rates. Other work has gone into balancing the allocation of a shared r...
